1. Hongdae Daldogne
We stumbled upon a random underground pocha in Hongdae! Our plan was to enjoy some drinks (Makgeolli & Soju), but we had to order at least one dish per person. The vibe here is very different from what youβd find in Singapore, so Iβd recommend trying a pocha at least once while in Korea. I went with the kimchi ramyun but found it underwhelmingβit lacked flavor. Iβd suggest trying another pocha as this one didnβt have anything that stood out.
2. BHC Chicken
Think KFC, but with a Korean twist! Their chicken is coated with garlic powder and other spices, and the drumlets were fantasticβdefinitely worth a try!
3. Sotpot? (Seongsu)
We visited this local steamed rice pot spot in Seongsu and ordered beef with egg, abalone rice, and eel rice. The eel portion was super generous! You scoop out most of the eel and rice, then pour a light broth into the remaining third of the bowlβdeliciously grilled and tender. The abalone rice had a standout umami flavor that elevated the dish. Super tasty!
4. Mega Coffee
The drinks here are massive and very affordable! Prices start at around $1+, making this spot a great alternative to Meixue, though they specialize more in coffee.
5. Random Eatery at Mt. Seorak Cable Car
After arriving at the Mt. Seorak Cable Car station, cold and hungry, we quickly found a nearby eatery. I ordered the soondubu jjigae, and for about $10, the portion was great, with plenty of ingredients. The broth was flavorful and even had meat pieces inside!
6. Takeaway from Sokcho Market
We picked up various dishes from the market and enjoyed them back at our apartment. The highlights were the steamed crabs stuffed with fried crab rice, grilled beef cubes, and a unique dish of kimchi rolls wrapped in pork belly. We also tried makgeolli bread, potato pancakes, and chicken nuggets.
7. Korean BBQ
In the chilly weather, Korean BBQ was perfect! The warmth from the stove in an open-air setting made it extra comforting. We paired it with soybean stew and kimchi stew to really warm ourselves up.
8. Chicken Tanghoon
Absolutely delicious! This dish was more similar to Chinese cuisine, with potato starch noodles soaking up the flavorful sauceβso satisfying!
