I've finally ticked off surfing from my bucket list 🥹 Initially, I was too scared to try it, but actually it wasn't as difficult as I imagined it to be! After experiencing surfing for the first time, here are the do's and don'ts that you need to take note!
✅DO'S
🏄♀️Take lessons - if you're a beginner, it's highly recommended to take lessons from a qualified instructor. DM me if you want to take lessons from my teacher Steve. He's a local and gives lessons at Seminyak beach in Bali at $20 for 2hrs. Super worth it!
🏄Warm up and do stretches before heading to the ocean! Surfing can be physically demanding, so to prevent injuries, prepare your muscles for a safe and enjoyable experience 💪
🏄♂️Use right equipment. Ask your instructor to give you a beginner friendly board (typically a longboard made of foam)
🏄🏾Start with small, slower waves to practice first, and eventually finding your balance until you get the hang of it.
🚫DON'TS
🏄🏻♀️Don't overestimate your capabilities and listen to your body! Surfing should be a fun activity, and as a beginner, take things slow and don't attempt to counter large waves to prevent injuries and accidents.
🏄🏿♂️Don't ignore safety. The waves are a natural phenomenon, and you cannot control it. Always be mindful and only attempt to surf when you are confident. Better safe than sorry!
🏄🏼Don't give up easily. Surfing is a sport that needs practice, so it could be really hard at first. Don't get discouraged if you fall off frequently. They say fall down seven times, stand up eight!
🏄♀️Don't forget sunscreen! Spending hours under the sun could burn and damage your skin. Protect yourself by applying sunscreen with a high SPF, wear a rash guard or a surf hat to protect yourself from the sun.
