recently visited bangkok in december’23 and here are some things i wish i knew and my story of dealing with the traffic jam here… but first:
— choose which airport to land
in bangkok, there are 2 different airports that you can choose to land on.
suvarnabhumi (bbk) is the bigger airport and is directly connected to the bts, making it easier to go to your destination/hotel without worrying about the jam.
don mueang airport (dmk) is a smaller airport nearer to more touristy and famous spots such as chatuchak. however, it is not connected to the bts (their version of mrt) so you have to grab to your designation. which speaking of grab, bangkok is known for their bad traffic jam… and i mean really bad ; which leads me to my next point
— using their bts (train) > grab/taxi
when my sisters and i landed at the airport, we took a total of 2.5h (when the journey was supposed to be 1h) 💀 that was how bad the jam was… it was barely moving that we left the grab and walked by foot with our luggage for 15 minutes to reach our destination on time… so yea we learnt our lesson and took bts throughout our trip afterwards except for the grab back to the airport when heading home!
— bring more cash!! $$
of course when it came to malls, they are mostly cashless, but we underestimated the amount of cash we needed, especially when it came to buying clothes at chatuchak, food at markets etc. always good to bring more cash!
hope these tips will help you for your next bangkok trip 🫶🏻
