How to draw like a Renaissance Painter 🏛️

Used a walkthrough video to make this drawing of a cast statue. Here is what I learned:

1. Measure, measure, measure!

Use the side of your pencil and your finger to measure a part of your reference. How long is the height compared to the width? What is at the halfway point on the height? What is at each third?

2. Place the elements of your drawing in like a puzzle

Measuring often means that you can be confident when you go into shading

3. Good rendering can not make up for bad drawing

It's true! Many people wonder "Why doesn't my rendering/shading/coloring look realistic... it can't look realistic if the drawing underneath has structural issues!

4. Resist the urge to draw too fast.

This walkthrough video for just the sketch part was a full hour! It felt excruciatingly slow. But it is well worth your time to sketch slower so that you are not still fixing proportion issues later in the rendering process. It was great that I was forced to slow down while sketching.

Anyways, this was a single lesson from jakedontdraw's course. Yes I am a little bit addicted to art courses at this point 😂. But this one is good for even absolute beginners to drawing.
