Agua de florida - Florida water DIY

Hey everyone! For this weeks Modern Magick Monday I’m showing you how to make Florida Water! This was my first time making it and overall I feel like it was a success. I’ll provide a long term update once it’s done fermenting.

What is florida water?

Florida water was created in the 1800’s as a unisex fragrance. It is commonly used in Afro-centric and Cuban practices (Hoodoo, Santeria & Espiritismo) but now widely used by most people with spiritual beliefs. It is said that florida water can cleanse, connect you to your ancestors and even provide you with visions.

How do you use it?

You can use Florida water to cleanse your space, apply it to your skin lightly (it can dry out your skin) before you do any spiritual work, as an offering on your altar or even in a spiritual bath.

How to make it:

You can purchase this online (it’s even on Amazon) but if you’d like to make your own version closer to what is sold, you can just use vodka/perfumers alcohol and all the essential oils that correspond with Florida water in whatever quantities you like. Florida water typically has a very heavy lavender scent but if you don’t like lavender, feel free to use more rose essential oil.

I’m not going to put specific measurements only because I feel like this is something where you should *feel* what you need for your craft. What I used:

Vodka

Cinnamon stick

Lavender

Rose petals (pink and red)

Ground sage

Rosemary

Bay leaf

Pink salt

if you are not comfortable using vodka you can used distilled water instead but it must be distilled. The reason why vodka is preferred is because that way it won’t get moldy. You are supposed to let it sit for a full lunar cycle before you use it. I put all of my ingredients** in a black organza bag so when it’s ready, I don’t have to fish out anything/strain it. I held it in my hands and set my intention over it. You are supposed to keep it in a dark place and shake it daily.

** Update: I still need to strain it because the cinnamon is breaking down and the vodka is over saturated from everything i added. This will not impact the over all quality of your florida water. Once fully strained it should be a transparent amber color.

Final update: the last photo is the most accurate depiction of how it will look after it’s been strained and in its new container.
