The Beauty of Cultural Blending: A West African Woman’s Perspective on Fashion

Hi, lemon drops! STORY TIME!! Welcome back to another segment of the Foreign Girl Diaries! As a young woman originally from the vibrant country of Liberia in West Africa, I’ve always marveled at the incredible diversity of culture across the globe. Fashion in particular fascinates me as a bridge between different lands and peoples.

Imagine my delight when I first noticed the use of traditional West African fabrics and patterns being incorporated into modern outfits during my travels in Los Angeles! While typically worn at home for comfort and chores in Liberia, such as sweat pants and t shirts are viewed or worn in the Western hemisphere, seeing these lively African textiles adapted as contemporary fashion statements in the U.S. always makes me smile.

Of course, like most places, Liberians tend to wear designer brands and Western styles from day to day, when going out, or for special occasions. But the open blending of cultures through fashion still fills me with awe. While some misconceptions persist that traditional garments are actually dress-up wear in Liberia rather than everyday comfortable attire like a pair of sweats, I adore the cultural exchange this fusion represents!

As a storyteller, I live to share the beauty, diversity, and open-hearted spirit of my Liberian homeland with the world. Our cultures have more similarities than differences when we keep our hearts and minds open.
