If you’ve got Japan on your bucket list, you probably would’ve come across Tsujihan — a small restaurant serving rice bowls with a glorious mound of sashimi on top.

As an ardent lover of raw fish, I knew I had to try it because honestly it just looked so good.

🍜 The ambience:

Ngl I thought I was a genius by coming early but it seems everyone had the same idea and the line was already snaking when I got there 45-mins before opening at 10.15am.

The queue moves at an okay pace, they’ll come out to take your order in advance so it’s all ready when you go in.

After an arduous 2-hour wait, I finally got in and IT WAS DEAD QUIET INSIDE WHICH WAS A BIT STRESSFUL HAHA.

🍚 The food:

I opted for the Matu (¥2200). I’m usually not a fan of uni but I figured since I waited so long for it, I may as well give it a shot.

Each set comes with warm barley tea, sea bream sashimi, and some pickles. Pro-tip: save one of your sashimi slices for later to add to the broth.

The bowl itself was pretty glorious, with a heap of crab, negitoro, shrimp, clam, squid etc. It was as generous as they say it was!

The seafood was fresh and really yummy; I didn’t really like the uni but I didn’t hate it, it went well with the rest of the ingredients.

Around finishing half the bowl, I proceeded to put my bowl on the counter. This indicates for some sea bream broth to be added (they’ll ask if you want more rice too FOC!!!).

Honestly I thought the bowl couldn’t get better but the broth was so sweet and so good!!!!!!!! I InHALED IT. Add your remainder sashimi to the broth and let it cook for a bit, the result is a creamy, umami, slice of sea bream to pair with the rest of your rice.

✨ The conclusion:

IT WAS GOOD. But was it 2-hour standing in the sun (thankfully it wasn’t summer I could personally never) good? Nah.

I’d eat it again but I’ll queue 30-mins at max — I feel like Tokyo is a treasure trove of food and there’s so many restaurants waiting.

Go around 2-3PM as that’s when the queue was the shortest (I got out around 1.30PM!). 🛒Product Item:
