Traveling To Portugal As A Solo Female Traveler

My first solo international trip was to Portugal in 2021. I was incredibly nervous and wanted to pick somewhere that was safe for a female traveler while also providing a new culture for me to experience.

Here are some of the top reasons why I think everyone should visit Portugal on an international trip, and especially a solo trip.

1. The transportation options are fantastic. I was able to navigate Lisbon's metro system in less than a day (and straight from the airport). I traveled via train to Sintra and Porto without any problems. The ticketing system is straight forward and easy for any traveler to navigate.

2. There wasn't much of a language barrier. I don't know Portuguese. I know a little bit of Spanish that does help at times, but not in Portugal. Thankfully, most people know English, so I was able to order from a restaurant easily and ask for help if I needed it.

3. The restaurant options were great for any budget and diet. One thing I always worry about is if I'm going to have trouble ordering food when I eat out (since I'm vegetarian for the most part). In Portugal I was able to find a lot of veggie-friendly restaurants without any worry.

4. There's so much to do in Portugal. What I loved most is the amount of things you can experience from wine tours to boat tours and everything in between. There wasn't a shortage of adventure!
