CONTROVERSIAL things I do as a parent

No but seriously. These are my personal convictions and some don’t even have to do with my faith.

We don’t do screen time. We only do movie nights as a family if we are going to be watching it together or go to our local theatre. We don’t watch inappropriate things around the kids either.

We don’t do Halloween.

As a christian I know we live in a fallen world and the spiritual world is a lot more real than we like to think. The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. It’s the most demonic day of the year. And having a conversation with a friend (who’s now an evangelist) but used to attend the church of satan. I heard more than what I needed to, to not feel inclined to participate in that day or any activities surrounding it.

We don’t do Santa or the Easter Bunny. Really anything that takes away from Jesus or can become an idol, we just don’t celebrate. It took a while for me to get to this point. Growing up, we never celebrated these days. It wasn’t because of being a follower of Christ but because we didn’t really care for it lol. And I always think it’s funny watching grown adults fight so hard to celebrate an old man in a read suit. Yes he’s there’s a history to him but he’s not important enough to do all these extra things in the month of December and take away from the true meaning of CHRISTmas.

We don’t lie to our children. Even if it’s something small. We want to lead by example and show our children that lying is never good. And also that the truth is always safe with us no matter how big the mistake is. This also ties into the whole Santa thing. How can I expect my child to believe me when I tell him Jesus is real if I fool him on a fat man in a read suit…

We don’t push our children to share or apologize.

We model what we want our children to do. And when we think about it our children literally can not grasp the idea of sharing or apologizing. Only that mom and dad told them so. my three year old has shown me that this is truly working for our family because he apologizes on his own. If he broke something of mine.. “mama I’m sorry, I broke ___”. With sharing he has started offering things to his sister. And his sister is only one but has caught on as well. She will bring things to her brother so that they can do things together. It is truly the sweetest thing.
