April is SA Awareness Month.

Being a trauma therapist, I get the honor of coming in contact with some of the strongest individuals, of all ages, whom all have a story. A story that is valid and understood. A story that is meant to be heard. A story that many will not let them define who they are or who they want to be.

Getting to be the person who gets to see clients at their lowest and have enough courage to sit with me and share their story is the greatest honor I hold. I tell my clients daily that they are heard, seen, valued, loved, and strong.

Denim day is a day in April to show support for survivors of SA and to eliminate victim blaming. It takes place every year on the last Wednesday in April in honor of SA Awareness Month. The Denim Day campaign was developed by Peace Over Violence in Los Angeles, an organization dedicated to building healthy relationships, families and communities free from sexual, domestic and interpersonal violence. The Denim Day campaign asks community members, officials, businesses and students to make a social statement by wearing jeans on April 26 to spread awareness and protest the misconceptions that surround sexual violence. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a SA conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who SA’d her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it.

I hope today, and everyday, we can show support to all who have a story, maybe even including ourselves, and be a voice to all who feel they may not have one.
