hi guys!! i’m a y2 biz student in smu, majoring in comms management and i just finished my FOURTH semester as a uni student which i cannot believe… i still have finals coming up but i’m more or less DONE with the sem and here’s just some insights i have made on what i’ve learned works for me and what i wish i knew

✨ THE GOOD STUFF ✨

> new friends, connections, networking: not to say you can’t get these things in other places, but going to school gave so much more structure to making these things happen. from just your regular classmates to orientation camps, or organised events that bring in external speakers or even connect you with the alumni network, i think it is a GUARANTEE you’ll be able to build the network you want/need in uni. i’m not too sure about other schools but this def is the case for SMU! in fact i think it is one of my top selling points to go into SMU if the courses fit what you want to do 😆

> further learning: i mean this is pretty obvious.. but hear me out! while people may have their reservations about certain courses of study being easy/common sense, there is a lot to learn about specific areas in each industry! whether it be technical skills or just insider info from your profs before you enter the working world, there’s something for you in every lesson. additionally, all the presentations/assignments also helps assess your hard skills eg in reports.

⚠️ THE NOT SO GOOD STUFF ⚠️

> the grind is REAL: i’ll place this here, though i really feel like its a good thing to practise. sometimes it gets very tough, but if you’re looking to build the motivation and habits to do well in school/work/life, uni is the way to go — because you NEED to have amazing time management and commitment in order to succeed. i do understand that the grind is not what everyone’s looking for, and studying in a competitive environment may just not be the place for you! there’s also been a lot of pressure from my peers to find a good internship or build up a portfolio/experience, which can be a good/bad thing depending on how you want to look at it hehe

i guess what i’ve been missing is a better understanding of what it is i want to be doing with my time, and how i can approach it. after two long years in uni, i think it does suffice to say i need to focus on my studies for the next few semesters and leave my internships/working experience to summer/school breaks.

to everyone else doing school right now, press on for your papers or projects!! and for the people considering uni, drop your questions or comments if you have them 🫶
