HA House: Part 1 - The Living and Dining (💡ideas)

I had the opportunity to design a home 🏠 for H&A, a lovely couple with two young children. They bought a 5-room resale.

Today, I’ll be sharing the design and some of my thought processes with you. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼! 🤭

Right off the bat, you can see warm timber and white tones echoing throughout the spaces. The couple expressed their liking towards light wood but wanted to steer clear from the muji-colour (which I totally agree 😂). So I selected something that’s slightly deeper in colour.

Flooring wise, they would like vinyl with herringbone lay (same as my own house yay 🙌🏻). In general they were open to having curves (I used it on the ceiling and added some LED cove lights to make it more dramatic) and fluted elements. They have also a requested to do without false ceiling.

✨ 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲:

🔸 Living room

- Since the windows of their unit faces the corridor, I placed a long built in seating space with backing to treat the half wall situation. The seat doubles up as storage space for shoes, etc.

- I’ve also placed a full height cabinet with mirror doors for shoes right beside the main door. I extended the cabinet out such that the doors of bedroom 4 can be tucked nicely behind.

- The TV console features fluted panel doors so that you can still control the electronic stuff without opening the cabinet doors. The TV itself is flushed with the feature wall. I added two column-like ‘structure’ on each side to make it look like one piece of furniture.

🔸 Kitchen

- The kitchen features the Bertazonni stove (which H&A have already made purchase for). I’ve added a tall rack at the side for them to put cooking condiments.

- Chose to do a shaker style doors for the cabinets + gold handles to give it more character.

- I placed the fridge nearer to the yard because I reckon it can look bulky.

- Separating the kitchen and dining area is a long island with curved edges. The island wraps around one of the default structural columns. Added lights to make the columns look more ‘intentional’.

🔸 Dining area

- H&A wanted a wooden slab for their dining table which was large enough that could host more guests. Was able to fit a 8-pax table. Chose seats with black cushions to create some contrast.

- Placed mirrors and some 20mm x 20mm timber strips to dress up the wall a little.

🔸 Common Bathroom

- Kept it rather simple with a warm lime wash effect

- Introduced a organic shaped mirror and a circular standalone sink to give it a more artsy feel
