I think I’m really on a cooking spree LOL. 😂 I guess cooking helps me de stress and not think about any other things 😺.

Husband was craving for something soupy and hearty so I decided to make us wonton (from scratch!) cabbage soup for dinner! It was so fun to make. The end product was very yummy. We ate it with hot piping rice 🍚

In my husband’s words - “whoa it’s better than anything I’ve eaten out there”. 😉 Safe to say it was a hit 😋 Ok then again, he’s Malay so it’s unusual for him to eat Chinese food on a daily basis… So this is indeed a treat for him hahaha (before he goes for his reservist next week 🥲)

💰 Total cost for four servings: Slightly less than $14

I froze half of the wontons for another time.

Here are the ingredients for the wonton 🥟 (28 pieces):

🔸 250g minced chicken

🔸 x4 grey prawns

🔸 Spring onion

🔸 x1 egg (half goes into the mix and half to be used to seal the wontons)

🔸 Wonton pastry skin

🔸 Sesame oil

🔸 Soya sauce

🔸 Rice

Ingredients for the soup:

🔹 1x chicken bone (NTUC sells one whole chicken bone: less than $2!)

🔹 Half a Chinese cabbage

🔹 1x stalk of spring onion

🔹 Fried scallions (bought the ready made one from NTUC)

🔹 Sesame oil

🔹 Salt

🔹 Soya sauce

——————

🥟 Here’s the recipe for the wonton filling:

1. De shell and de vein the prawns before mincing them up.

2. Chop the green onion (we want the thick stalk area and a bit of the green parts)

3. Mix the minced prawns, minced chicken, chopped green onion, 3 table spoons of soya sauce and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Mix well! You may change the condiments ratio to suit your taste buds. You can also add white pepper to have a lil spice.

4. Add in half a beaten egg

5. Get wrapping! Use the remaining half of the egg mixture as your glue to seal the edges.

6. Freeze the wonton if you’re not having it on the same day

🍲 As for the soup:

1. Add the whole chicken bone, one green onion stalk and salt. Simmer on low heat. I’m using induction stove so it’s more prone to burning (and bubbling) rapidly.

2. Chop/peal your cabbage to palm size pieces

3. After 20 minutes, remove and discard the withered green onion stalk. By now, should be able to smell the chicken soup from another room haha.

4. Throw in the cabbage leaves and add some generous amount of fried scallions (I just eyeballed the amount. This is a crucial step to really give the soup an umami taste. Learnt from my Teochew granny one ok)

5. Add in more salt, soya sauce and sesame oil to taste. Continue simmering on low heat for 15 minutes.

6. Put in the wontons gently into the soup that is simmering lightly.

7. Remove after 6-8 mins once they start to float to the surface. You can taste test one first.

8. Scoop into bowls and serve !! Add some more fried scallions to bring in some colour and crunch.

Hope you’ll like this recipe as much as we do! Have fun folding the wontons. It’s a good family bonding activity also tbh 😗🤓
