as yโall know, i went on an exchange programme not too long ago (mentally still thereโฆ in my travelling eraโฆ) but now that travelling is back in full force, i know many people who are venturing to europe! so i wanted to share more about my experience in those countries and how i planned my trip so you guys can have a reference!
spain is truly one of my FAVOURITE countries for sure. i fell in love the moment i saw the blue skies and beautiful architecture. i loved it way more than any other country and i would highly recommend everyone go. but do take note that many people have said that spain is quite dangerous (especially in the touristy areas) and barcelona especially. very crowded and many tour groups, but it had the most stunning and jaw-dropping architecture hands down. (even the floors were prettyโฆ)
also, the food was actually amazing. no matter where you go or which restaurant you enter, they seem to do their eggs, potatoes and ham PERFECTLY. absolutely blew my mind bc i didnโt know how Good these simple ingredients could taste! you need to try the iberico for sure.

stayed in two different hostels in barcelona and madrid.
๐บ๐๐๐ ๐ฑ๐๐๐ ๐ ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐น๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐ | 10-bed female only dorm
๐ Carrer Balmes 75, Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain
๐ staff were super friendly! your receptionist will bring you all the way up to your room which is quite nice.
๐ vv social hostel, they have many people staying there and quite a few are party people. also people just like to go to barcelona to party.
๐ location is not the best - it was quite a distance away from the attractions and although it is central on the map, you still have to walk a fair distance.
๐ toilet & shower cubicles are quite limited per level! there were a few times i had to wait a while before showering bc the cubicles were taken up.
๐ป๐๐ ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐ ๐๐๐ | 8-bed female only dorm ensuite
๐ Plaza del Celenque 3 5, Madrid, Madrid, Spain
๐ very central location, legit walked everywhere and it was so convenient
๐ coolest entry ever? they register your thumbprint and its keyless so you donโt have to worry about losing the card. (biometric privacy is clearly not my top concern)
๐ en-suite toilet was super convenient!
๐ the showers were hard to navigate bc there are no hooks in the cubicle. also i had to be super careful about noise bc the door between the beds and toilets is not soundproof.
๐ the stairs up to the bunk bed was v thin and hard to climb - i actually fell from itโฆ ๐คก

inter-city: i took the train and it was quite straightforward to book on trainline/trainpal (i generally prefer trainline in europe, more companies are on there).
within barcelona: hola barcelona (3-day/72h pass) โฌ25.50 - unlimited journeys on metros, bus, montjuic funicular, tram and other trains. as i visited camp nou which is quite a distance away and montjuic, it made sense for me. make sure to calculate for your own trip! barcelona is walkable if you take it slow.
within madrid: 100% walkable, i did not have to buy any cards and i just walked around to explore! imo, much more concentrated than barcelona.

โผ๏ธ spain is quite a popular country so make sure to book famous attractions in advance! sagrada familia in particular has super long queues, i highly recc you go either in the morning to avoid the crowd or evening where the sunset hits the stained glass and itโs super pretty.
โผ๏ธ barcelona is Known for pickpockets so keep your personal belongings close!
โผ๏ธ generally i feel the food is decent everywhere but the markets/mercados are quite overpriced, so be prepared to pay a lot more there.
