Fansipan

I realised there are very little information about hiking Fansipan as compared to Mount Kinabalu 😭 Here are three things I wish I knew before hiking Fansipan (via Tram Ton Pass, 2D1N)

⛰️ The Terrain: In my opinion, I feel that the terrain is a good mixture of some Malaysia hikes I have done. It has “river” crossing like Bukit Kutu, A LOT OF STEEP STEPS + ladders like Gunung Ledang’s KFC section + ladders, muddy terrain like Gunung Irau’s Mossy Forest route and also steps like Mount Kinabalu. I wish I knew how SLIPPERY the rocks and ladders can get when it rains. I hiked during the rainy season and of course couldn’t escape the rain. It was drizzling on and off while I was ascending, and I actually slipped quite a few times along the way up. Ended up with big bruises on my thigh too HAHA. There are also quite a bit of descending route and yea, there will always be more ups when you come down. 😭

💤 The Camping Site 2 at 2,800m (aka sleeping site): There are two “houses”, one for sleeping and another for eating + cooking. There are also squat toilets available and sinks (so yes you can wash your hands there). But the toilets have NO HOOKS at all so it was hard to change out of my hiking clothes into fresh clothes before I head to bed at 8pm. Ended up changing in the sleeping area after we realise we can actually lock the door 😂 Sleeping area is just an elevated wooden platform and they provided us sleeping bags for the night.

👣 The amount of stairs leading up to the summit: MAN IT WAS VERY PAINFUL. As I approached the temple, I heard the bell and I THOUGHT we were close to the summit already. But after that it came a series of stairs that I didn’t expect. I did read online that there are “600 steps” to the summit and “any reasonably fit person can climb”. True to a certain extent…. but if you are “reasonably fit” and started hiking from the camping site 2, I still think the “600 steps” may not be an “any reasonably fit person can climb” thing. 😭😭😭😭 I was constantly asking why am I doing this to myself as I watched the funiculars go up 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪

Out of all the hikes I have done, I would say Fansipan is the hardest, harder than Kinabalu and Gunung Ledang. I have never wanted to give up on a hike before and this is literally the first…… 🤣😭

Please be prepared ok!!! There are definitely more difficult hikes out there but this is definitely not easy, for me at least!! And PLEASE as much as possible, avoid rainy season 😂
