A Ribbon Skirt for My Sister

When I was younger my mom taught me to sew; but it was only recently, and out of necessity, that I started sewing again. Since September of 2022 I’ve had the opportunity to make over 100 ribbon skirts for my family and friends.

DISCLAIMER: My “supervisor” is not normally allowed to be anywhere near the process of making a skirt. But this skirt in particular was for my younger sister, so I allowed him to monitor my work.

So what makes a ribbon skirt a ribbon skirt? Well…the robbins of course!

These skirts can hold significant meaning to the wearer. When making a skirt, it is my intention that the wearer will feel empowered and be reminded of the strength they hold. I so greatly enjoy seeing ribbon skirts worn more frequently throughout our indigenous communities! I’m also extremely grateful that the knowledge of making them and other cultural garments have been passed down to me.
