Japan’s Best Bamboo Groves

If you’re visiting Kyoto on your trip to Japan, then a visit to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is most likely on your itinerary. It’s by far one of the most famous and iconic sites not just in Kyoto, but in all of Japan.

But with all this fame comes LOTS of crowds. I visited shortly after sunrise, and it was nearly impossible to get a good shot without dozens of photobombers.

Thankfully I I discovered Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple, which is a fantastic dupe for Arashiyama. Let me break down the differences for you.

Arashiyama

- Very popular and VERY crowded no matter what time of day you visit.

- Free to enter

- Longer pathway = more bamboo

Adashino Nenbutsuji

- Much less crowded, so it’s easy to get photos without other people in them.

- 500 yen entrance fee. (About $3.50)

- Has much more than just bamboo, including statues, a Buddhist temple and some beautiful fall folliage if you visit during autumn.

But the best part - you don’t have to choose! These two sites are just a 20 minute walk apart or an 8 minute drive.
