James 1 🌿

Starting to read James tonight!

Background: this book was written by James, brother of Jesus around AD 46 for the purpose of practical wisdom and a challenge to maintain faith.

The first part of chapter one talks a lot about trials and how they are inevitable (James said “when” we experience trials not “if”). He tells us that trials are a time to call on God for wisdom and that if we show a lack of faith we are showing we have an unstable foundation. We cannot split our loyalty between God and the world. Our loyalty needs to be on God alone!

The second part tells us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. The word of God carries the power of God. We need both faith and works too have a true relationship with God. In Matthew 7:24-27 during Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount He says someone who hears the word without doing it is like a man who builds his house on the sand but the one who hears and does is like the man who builds his house on a rock.

Application Step: Is the way you live and treat people a reflection of your relationship with God?

This is definitely a struggle for me; I’m working on it. “Quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger” - repeating this to myself this week 🫶🏼🌿
