Took a flight to Europe to attend my bestie’s wedding in May and while the trip was amazing, the experience was marred upon my return to Singapore.

I excitedly booked my flight with Emirates - they were offering a great price and I went ahead despite the extremely long layovers.

My return flight was delayed due to various reasons and I literally grabbed my luggage and ran straight out to meet my parents who had been waiting for more than an hour to pick me up… close to midnight.

The nightmare began the moment I reached home. I spotted a huge crack across the top right hand corner of my baggage and I panicked dialed Emirates’ customer service centre in Singapore which was closed.

Waited till the next morning and called in again and was advised to send in a complaint through the online portal. Little did I know that this would be the start of a months-long nightmare.

Emirates took an average of 6-9 weeks to reply each email, asking for proof of travel, receipts and photos. And after all that, offered a 50% compensation off the original price despite my baggage being just a year-old. It was literally my third time using it since I purchased it.

I’m still in the midst of fighting for fair compensation after close to 4 months since I’ve submitted the complaint (10 June) but in the meantime…

PSA:

1. Steer clear of Emirates - you get what you pay for. Emirates was cheaper but SQ would never string you along and lowball you when problems arise

(For the same price point I’d had no issues with Qatar and Etihad…)

2. Keep your receipts well

3. Buy travel insurance
