books that made me ugly cry 😭

if you enjoy crying your heart out while reading at 2 in the morning, here’s some recommendations 🥲

📖 a thousand splendid suns: wowow… this novel centres itself around the tragic Afghanistan war and follows the story of 2 women, Mariam and Laila. I did not expect myself to feel THIS emotional but this story is truly heartbreaking as it covers themes like sisterhood, love, the patriarchy and war. Despite such a heavy topic, Khaled managed to grasp my attention throughout and conveyed the messages of the novel in a digestible manner without underplaying the seriousness and pain wrought by war. A truly amazing read that will leave your heart broken

📖 the song of Achilles: if you’re a hopeless romantic like me, you will be crying non-stop and gasping for air, I PROMISE YOU if you read this novel. It has a Greek mythology theme to it (duh) and follows the love story between Patroclus and Achilles. Miller’s writing is extraordinary as her words capture the purity and rawness of true love and adoration. This novel really left me crying tears of joy and sadness, lots of tears…. I deadass took a week long break to recover and read again because this was all I could think about after finishing it. A must read for hopeless romantics!

📖 the travelling cat chronicles: such a cute and simple novel with easy writing, but carries such heavy yet wholesome themes like family and love. Arikawa’s writing idk how, but he really managed to encapsulate the way I think a cat would think and speak HAHA tbh I got a little bored in some instances, but I finally got the gist of what was happening and man when I told you my heart broke, it BROKE. A good read if you’re trying to get out of a reading slump, or just want to experience pain :”)

📖 it ends with us: honestly not the biggest fan of her writing style, kinda gives me wattpad fanfiction vibes…..but can't lie this novel made me cry for DAYS on end and touches on heavy topics like domestic abuse (see trigger warnings online if you need!) and made me realise how difficult it can be from the POV of victims.
