Museums have been my safe space away from the chaos from life and these 5 museums I returned to over and over again in my 9 years of LA living.

1. The Getty Center (free but parking is not):on a Spring Friday afternoon the Getty Center lawn is the perfect place to soak in the sun’s warmth and avoid crowds. Get there before 1AM and avoid LA traffic. Entrance is free but parking is so cut costs by making it a group activity.

2. Peterson automotive museum ($21): the bask through glory of the most beautiful cars and a wonderfully designed museum, Peterson was my favorite museum in LA to bring a sketch book and draw. The lighting and sound design is impeccable and there’s no shortage of inspiration.

3. LACMA (free-$25) LACMA is famous AND expensive but there are a few tricks to get in for free. First you can go as a LA county resident with ID after 3PM except on Wednesdays or if you have Bank of America Credit Card you can go for free on the first full weekend. Personally, I like to go to the free jazz evenings where people picnic and enjoy the outdoor crowd, but be warned the LA tar pits are next door and sometimes the tar smell wafts by.

4. California science center (free): it’s a stone’s throw away from USC and is general admissions is always free. I loved sitting by the aquarium with my laptop and work or people watch as a cheap solo activity to escape the summer heat. It’s conveniently right off the USC expo line and if you drive there’s street parking by USC. Let it known, there will be lots of children and families around.

5. The broad museum (free): general admissions to the broad is free but reservations are highly encouraged especially since pibes can get pretty long. The permanent art collection is always a delight and their rotating exhibits (not free) is some of the best around town.
