how i started wearing jirai kei 🌷🖤

following my previous post sharing about what #jiraikei is and the history of the subculture, i wanted to share my own personal story of how i started wearing jirai! 🩷(⁠◡⁠ ⁠ω⁠ ⁠◡⁠)

although it's been around for quite awhile, i only just started getting into jirai fashion around jan-feb this year! (2024)

i first heard of the term "jirai kei" back in 2022-2023 when it was starting to gain traction as a fashion trend in japan 🎀✨

back then, i would see girls wearing jirai kei on my insta/tiktok fyp from time to time and i'd think,, wow, they're so brave to wear cute frilly outfits in public 😳👀 i could never HAHAHA (⁠╥⁠﹏⁠╥⁠)

like,, wearing jirai fashion makes you stand out so much ?? i wouldn't want to get stared on by strangers in public 😭😭 plus, i didn't think i would suit these types of girly or frilly clothes 👎🏻👎🏻

anyways, my bf suggested i should give it a shot! according to him, he thinks jirai fashion would suit me well? 🤨 (not sure whether i could trust him on this one tbh)

since he was encouraging me, i thought it'll probably be fun to experiment with a different style 👚💖 imean .. what could go wrong right 😅

i started to look more into jirai kei; scrolling insta/tiktok for fashion inspo, browsing taobao for cheap options etc.

(like even if it doesn't suit me, i wouldn't lose that much money 🥲💸💸)

after some research and contemplating, i bought #MyFirst jirai kei haul in late-january! 🥳🎉 i got 3 blouses and a skirt to experiment with ♡⁠˖⁠꒰⁠ᵕ⁠༚⁠ᵕ⁠⑅⁠꒱

slowly but surely, i started to get used to wearing them out ^^

initially, i was pretty awkward wearing jirai fashion in public .. it was such a big change from what i was used to 😭

(for context, i used to be into more streetwear/acubi styles! i also wore a lot of h&m/cotton on, with some taobao and minga london influences 💕 but for the most part, i just mix&matched wtv i felt like wearing that day lol)

fast forward to today,

i'm definitely much more comfortable in jirai kei! 🫶🏻🩷 i wear jirai every now and then when i go out, or just whenever i feel like dressing up 🤭

(ironically, jirai fashion isn't exactly a "comfort fit" ?? HAHAHAH)

but i guess i've gotten used to it?

at the same time i realised there's nothing wrong with wearing something different or outstanding!

if people stare at you in public 👀 they're probably thinking about how unique your sense of style is 🤭✨

it's totally okay to express yourself through fashion 💕 in fact, you definitely should!!

someone once told me "sg mrt could use more good looking people" 😭 HAHAHAH

of course, jirai fashion isn't for everyone 😅 but if it piques your interest, you definitely should give it a shot!! ❤️
