i did an overseas exchange to korea from aug’23 - dec’23, and made a post to help those still deciding if they shld go for it here!
during my exchange, i realised that i’ve made many mistakes :” here are some tips from my personal experience so u won’t have to make the same mistake as me 🤡
💡staying in dorm is NOT ALWAYS CHEAPER
- dormitory is not always cheaper than airbnb, especially for private uni (i spent ~ $1.7k for 4mnths)
- my dorm facility: twin room + personal toilet, no cooking, shared fridge and microwave, there’s a laundry room (washer + dryer), vending machine
- other exchange students who stayed in airbnb shared that it was cheaper, as they split the cost of the house, save $$ by cooking meals!!
- tip: choose one within walking distance to sch to save more $ on transport!
💡 don’t overpack
- for 4 months, i think bringing 1.5 - 2 weeks worth of clothes is enough
- u will be buying a lot more while u are there and u will not dress up as much as u think u wld 🤣
- u will be re-wearing ur clothes more often than u think u wld, so don’t waste ur luggage space!
- also, if u will be experience season change take note of the duration of each season u will be experiencing and pack accordingly!
💡bring things u want to throw
- this is ur chance to clear ur closet too!
- bring all ur old clothes & undergarments (more space for ur shopping!)
- if u are experiencing 1 season for less than 3 weeks, just bring clothes that u 100% wanna throw!
- bring old hangers & towels too!
- THROW EVERYTHING when u are packing to return! (best feeling ever 😆)
💡 try to avoid early return flights
- unlike SG, the airport can be very far from the city area… so if u can, avoid booking flights between 5am - 9am
- u will have to factor in distance + jam (up to 2hrs travelling time to airport)
- if u really have no choice, i would suggest to stay overnight at the airport rather than waking up early
- especially during holiday season, the airport can be very packed (in korea) my friend was at the airport 2.5hrs before her flight but still missed it because of the crowd 🥲
💡shower filter
- i realised that my hair fall was very bad on my first 2 weeks
- some korean friends recommended me to get a shower filter from Diaso
- this 2,000₩ purchase saved me from becoming BALD 👩🏻🦲
💡sim card
- buying an e-sim from SG can be costly
- buying from local network providers can be cheaper & more convenient
- i got mine from chingu mobile (70,000₩ for 4 months, unlimited data) and it worked really well!
