in today's post is yet another guide to one of China's most famous sites and also the site that inspired the Avatar movies! it's none other than ZHANGJIAJIE ⛰️!! it has been a bucket list destination for myself for a really long time so this was really something i was looking forward to! however, by now, i've realised that it's not very easy to find information on places of attractions in China and so i had to spend so much time trying to figure out the area and important information in order to maximise my time there 😁

for those looking to travel to Zhangjiajie i hope that this post will be useful for you!! below i have included some tips, recommendations, and my itinerary and cost ⬇️

🏞️

Zhangjiajie is MASSIVE

first and foremost, Zhangjiajie is itself a city AND a national park (2 separate places) so make sure you keep that in mind! and be sure to dedicate at least 2 full days just for the national park! the park is where you can do hiking and visit many of the famous sites such as the cliff side elevator (Bailong elevator), the 'avatar floating mountains', etc.

when you buy a ticket for the park it is automatically valid for 4 days 👍🏼 and it'll be linked to your passport so just scan it at any entrance and you're good to go! there are also 5 different entrances to the park and most people stay near/at Wulingyuan 武陵源and then enter from the East entrance so you'll find the most hotels/eateries there!

personally i didn't want that so i chose to stay near the South entrance where it was so much quieter and peaceful! either way, make sure to study the map of the park to determine which route you want to take as there are multiple cable car routes that bring you up (saves so much time climbing up to the 'start point' as the scenery at the bottom area isn't really amazing)! if you're not sure, you can always ask your host for some guides/advice 👍🏼

🏞️

plan to visit OTHER sites too

there are other places to visit such as the Grand Canyon (大峡谷), and a couple of ancient towns like Furong (芙蓉) that you can visit too but they can be a little further away! i personally went to the Grand Canyon for half a day as it is where you'll find the famous glass bridge connecting a valley that is also home to the world's highest bungee jump! it is a breathtaking place for nature lovers if you have the time and definitely worth the ~1hr car ride there 😁👌🏼

i didn't find the time to visit any ancient towns but you should if you can as they sre really pretty when lit up at night (you can google to see how it will likely turn out!)

🏞️

don't forget TIANMEN Mountain

this is located in Zhangjiajie CITY which is different from the Zhangjiajie park! it is also where you'll likely be when arriving as it's where the train stations and airport are located 🚝🛫

this Tianmen Mountain is the famous mountain with a natural hole in the middle making it look like the gate to heaven! there is a famous flight of stairs that lead up to the hole (999 steps) that you can climb or buy a ticket to take the escalators up instead like i did 😂

there are 3 possible routes to take when buying the ticket for this place (A, B, C) and the most recommended one would be B! but if you're curious, here are the differences:

1.A brings you up the (i think world's longest/steepest) cable car to the peak which is above the hole in the mountain spot, and you can walk down to the hole and then back up to take the same cable car all the way down

2.B brings you up a shorter cable car to the hole in the mountain spot where you can climb the steps or take the escalators up and walk to the peak then take the long escalator back down (the one that A takes down)

3.C brings you up the same way as A but down the same way as B, as you dont have to go back up after walking to the hole and can take the shorter cable car down

🏞️

remember to PACK APPROPRIATELY

the weather is unpredictable and it can rain! i was lucky to have sunny weather for most of the time i was there but it rained during the day i visited the Tianmen Mountain and i was NOT prepared for that 😂

also, up the national park/Grand Canyon/Tianmen Mountain, food and drinks can be difficult to find and if you do find them they can be expensive! so try to have a day pack to bring essentials like snacks, water, rain gear, hat, portable chargers, and sunscreen!

finally, please wear appropriate shoes and clothing!!! if not you'll be cursing and swearing trying to climb and hike the national park 😭

🏞️

TRAVEL TIPS

didi is convenient to get you from the city to the park or anywhere else of interest as there is a substantial tourist presence there! otherwise you can try to take the public transport (can't help you here as i didn't take this) 🫣 other than that, depending on your accommodation, they may provide free drop offs to the nearest entrance gate of the park (like mine did everyday!) so if you're unsure just drop them a message before you book to check, as it can be troublesome/add unnecessary cost to your trip to find your way to the entrance each day 💸

inside the national park, there are free shuttle buses that bring people to different scenic spots instead of having to walk as you will be able to save plenty of time! however, take not that these can be really crowded and you'll have to be prepared to push, shove, run, and stand your ground to queue cutters for these buses (to be fair it's not just here but other parts of China too when any form of transport is involved so it is what it is 😂) do find out the routes from the staff there if you're lost/confused as it can be challenging to navigate them if you don't speak/read Chinese!

🏞️

all about TICKETS

tickets are not cheap here and they can add up if you go to multiple spots! also, do take note for special prices especially student prices you have to be a student in China to qualify (from what i've been told)!

to give you an idea of how much to prepare, here are the cost:

Zhangjiajie National Park*

227rmb (adults)

116rmb (students/elderly/children etc.)

Grand Canyon**

298rmb (adults)

211rmb (students/elderly/children etc.)

Tianmen Mountain

278rmb (adults)

147rmb (students/elderly/children etc.)

*cable cars sold separately and cost on average 60rmb per way for each cable car)

**package ticket includes glass bridge & 5 out of 7 other attractions inside, there are other packages you can consider too

so there you have it! these are the important information which i found to be difficult to obtain during my research and so i hope that this will be useful for you! if you have any other questions or other tips, please leave me a comment below! if not, stay safe and happy travelling y'all 🐢
