Building my career in corporate communications (1)

When I was applying for college, I already knew I wanted to work in the world of advertising/marketing/communications. While I was accepted to a variety of study programmes in advertisement and communication, I decided to pursue a more classic, academic path, and add on practical experience myself.

1. 🤓Studies: In college and grad school, I majored in Social Sciences (this included political sciences, economics, social sciences and mass communication) and minored in Art History and Multilingual Communication. I wanted to have a generic but strong background in social sciences in case I’d change my mind and choose to pursue doctoral studies. My courses had a theoretical & academic focus, even my mass communication ones. This meant that I was never taught how to use the Adobe Creative Suite, how to write a press release or edit a video. And this brings us to the next point.

2. 👩‍💻Extracurriculars: I was signing up for every club and event where I could be the VP of marketing and communications. This is how I learnt by myself Photoshop & Illustrator and got started with social media management. I would create marketing and communications campaigns for on-campus events - this meant designing posters and flyers, creating social media campaigns, and pitching the events to be promoted in the college newspaper.
