Hippie Tree of Traverse City

Tucked away in the woods near the Traverse City State Hospital is the most interesting piece of art…The Hippie Tree!

The original hippie tree is rumored to have been right outside one of buildings of the Traverse City State Hospital. The original tree was positioned just above an underground patient transport tunnel. When standing near the tree you could allegedly hear voices emerging from the ground which is how the tree got its title as a “portal to hell”.

The story has since migrated to a different tree on the property of the old hospital which is now known as the Hippie tree or portal to hell. People claim that it harbors the spirits of those who died at the old hospital. It’s reportedly haunted and there are many stories of individuals having paranormal experiences in the presence of the tree.

People come from all around to paint the tree in all sorts of ways. Some say it’s painted with the visions they have once they’ve become enlightened by the tree. Others say it’s just people leaving their mark. Either way all these contributions have made it a piece of art.

It’s said that if you leave your own addition to the art or a token when you visit then you yourself will become enlightened. Whether the stories are real or fake the tree itself is a sight to behold!
