How to ACTUALLY break into marketing

If you’re a student, internships are 1000% the easiest, surefire way to get started. If you’re not a student, there are programs in your area targeted towards younger people or entry level roles. In Canada, we have the Canada Summer Jobs program that hires new professionals in a field ages 18-30 – search for one in your area!

Self-teaching skills is probably my #1 tip for breaking into any field, and it’s always WAY easier than you think. I taught myself HTML and I’d attribute that to the reason I got my first email marketing job. They’ll teach you a lot on the job, but you definitely have a huge competitive advantage if they know they don’t need to go through the hassle of teaching you anything technical.

Lastly, free marketing certificates like Google Ads, Google Analytics, Hubspot Digital Marketing, etc. look great on your resume! It helps to have any marketing background that isn’t just formal education.
