I started watching Tell Me Lies when it first came out and I am beyond excited to continue watching as the second season comes to an end. Last year when I became obsessed with the story of Lucy and Stephan I noticed in the credits that it was based on a book, so I loaned it from my library and finished it as quickly as I watched all of season one, then I had to re-watch the entire season to compare the two forms.

Season 1: Lucy is starting College and leaving behind her mother whom she is terribly angry at for cheating on her father while on his death bed. During her first days at college she makes some new friends and even meets a guy. Early on her roommate has an accident and everything spins out of control. She starts dating Stephen and becomes completely infatuated with him even though their relationship is toxic. All the events of Lucy’s freshman year lead up to the engagement party of Bree and Evan 8 years later. Where she is still taunted by Stephen’s presence.

Season 2: Season two only spans one semester of Lucy’s Sophomore and Stephen’s Senior year. Evan comes clean about his infidelity, but yet we jump ahead to his wedding to Bree. New characters and lovers are introduced and Stephen is still tormenting Lucy, but she lets him get to her.

Book Review

Book name: Tell Me Lies

Author: Carola Lovering

Genre: Thriller/Coming of Age Romance/Psychological Fiction

My rating: Having watched the show first I had many expectations that weren’t met from the inspiration for the show. It was still a very good read that didn’t take long at all.

My review: Having spanned a time period of about 7 years it goes into the toxic college relationship of Lucy and Stephen. Where everything unfolds at the wedding of their college friends.

Differences: •First off in the book their college is in California, but the show has it located in New York State. Both Stephen and Lucy live near Long Island.

•In the book Lucy has an eating disorder and many times it is mentioned about her aversion to eating and need to exercise. It even mentions that she’s so underweight that she doesn’t get her period. In the show Lucy doesn’t seem that obsessed with her weight. It’s only mentioned in season two when Stephen catches Lucy out for a run and it’s brushed over.

•Another big difference between the book and show are the terms of the mother’s “unforgivable thing”. (I’m not going any spoilers to this, you’ll have to read it to figure that one out 😉)

•The most notable difference would be surrounding the death of Macy. Lucy didn’t actually know her personally. Her death occurred prior to Lucy beginning college. But Stephan still had something to do with it (I personally like the terms of the death better in the book)
