I only watched the trailer and thought the movie was just going to be 🎀pink🎀, ✨️sparkles✨️ and fun. SIKE 🤡 Little did I know that this would leave me crying in the movie theater, surrounded by screaming toddlers and their parents (guess who accidentally booked a ticket at the Dreamers Hall in Shaw Theatres 🌚).

Here's a review of what I liked/disliked about this movie (SPOILER ALERT ⚠️), as well as some personal thoughts about it.

➡️ Summary (by me): Barbie and Ken venture out into the real world after the former realizes that she's "malfunctioning" in Barbie World. In order to "fix" herself, she must find her owner who resides there. Gradually, Barbie finds out that the real world is a lot different than she'd thought... Will she ever become her perfect self again? 😔

👍 Okie let's move on to what I liked about this movie

✅️ As a female, I related strongly to the themes of womanhood, feminism, and gender identity. This show made me think a lot of what it means to be a female and how I can contribute as a girl in the society. In addition, I related to depressed Barbie and Barbie who thought she couldn't be anything 😔 cried my way through that

✅️ I LOVE PINK HEEHEE

✅️ This show made me appreciate my mother more. There's a line that said something like "we mothers stand still so our daughters can look back to see how far they have come."

UGHHH I CRIED SO MUCH AT THAT SCENE! After all, before my mother became a mother, she was just a girl herself.

✅️ It was funny

I laughed at the iron, how Barbie World was a parallel of the real world, the random jokes and innocuous sexual references, the slapstick acting of the cast (I almost bust a lung when everyone screamed about Barbie's flat feet), and in a lot of random parts that I'm unable to generalise here. It was so unserious at times. Love it.

✅️ Ryan Gosling's abs

Like have you seen them? I am seriously confused like how do you have so chiselled abs like that? Is he wearing a bodysuit? I WANNA HAVE COOL ABS LIKE HIM

✅️ Allan

He's so sweet I hope he gets to leave Barbie World and be happy 💗

✅️ Margot Robbie

She is SOOO PRETTY 💯 BARBIE

✅️ The Set of Barbie World

It looked so fake and real at the same time! sooo cool. I loved Mattel's headquarters too! The dark gray quarters of all the office workers contrasting with the pink French windowed headquarters where all the impt ppl were at YUM capitalism baby 🌚

👎 What I didn't like about it

❎️ Ken annoyed me

Please don't come at me but I disliked how Ken was so annoying when he was indoctrinated with patriarchal ideals and when he sang the song about being a blonde virgin bruh that reminded me of a misogynistic shiz

Please I understand that you're trying to get Barbie to notice you but PLEASE take a hint. At least he had character development and stopped being so weird at the end but 🤷‍♀️ If the actor wasn't Ryan I would've probably disliked Ken even more. I don't think he was the villain though because he had no ill intent, but I just don't really like him.

❎️ The themes of feminism could be better explained. I understood most of what they were trying to say (I think). However, I felt like topics were a bit too complex for young children to understand (how do you explain why Barbie causes dysphoria in growing kids to a 6 year old). Sometimes, it felt like they were using a lot of jargon that were a bit unique to the feminist sphere (destroying the patriachy etc) just for the sake of it.

But it's my own opinion and it doesn't have to appeal to EVERYBODY. So I was comforted that there was an attempt at putting the perspective on women instead 😆

❎️ Commentary threw me off a little

Especially when there was an emotional scene where Barbie was crying and feeling inadequate and the commentary said something about the producers shouldn't cast Margot if they wanted someone who was imperfect??? dk it really caught me surprise and the joke kinda flew over my head and distracted me from the topic at hand.

In conclusion, I'd agree that this movie is great (haven't watched a show I related to in such a long time). However, I wouldn't say it's 100 % perfect 😉 Moving on, I hope the success of this show inspires more people to create better female-centric shows (not just make a female superhero and call in "female empowerment" 🌚)
