This is Bourbon. My first horse, I had him for five months then he coliced with no signs. People say that when you lose a horse it gets easier. But the truth is, it doesn't. Owning a horse isn't like having a dog or a cat, infact I dare to say that they're like kids. They're high maintenance, and need a lot of work. And you grow. such a different bond with them than what you would a cat, or a dog. It's hard to be there for a horses last breath, and it may be one of the hardest things you go through but it's worth it. being the owner of a horse, and staying by them for their final moments gives them a bit of comfort, and to me personally it gives me a bit of comfort underneath all of the sorrow. Because it means me as a horse rider, and owner that I've tried everything I possibly could. Now I'm not saying to move on from your horse. Never move on, but accept and continue with your life as a horse owner. Always keep your horses in your heart, they'll always be with you. Loosing Bourbon felt like the end of the world, but if the world stopped for sorrow we'd be screwed. Everyone talks about the glamour of horse riding but never of the deaths. When a horse's health starts to decline some put them up for auctions for the fear of watching their horse die. Never do that. They don't deserve that, they've done so much and deserve you there. And though I can't promise that it gets easier I will promise you that some doors will open up even if it's rocky at first. And that horses are memorable. Stay by their side til their last breath if you can, and if you can't ride them with your whole heart. Take advantage of all the time you have with them, because you never know one moment from the next.
