Washing period underwear..... gross as it seems?

I've been thinking of getting period panties and I always thought there was some sort of tool to help squeeze the blood out over the toilet, etc so that I would just hand wash the underwear itself.

I only just realized that there is NO such tool and now I'm wondering if it's as gross as it sounds? I'm imaging wringing a soaked towel or squeezing a soakes sponge and all the bits and fluids coming out.....is this really the way? Or am I just overthinking it? I hand wash my underwear when there's leaks and stain but I've never squeezed out a pair soaked in blood.... What's it like squeezing all the blood out by hand?
