My husband and I were scrolling on instagram one day and came across a post talking about a rule that can totally save and improve a relationship. We knew we had to adopt it immediately.
THE RULE: support in public, correct in private
When I heard that I reflected on the times where we were with close friends or family and I corrected my husband in front of them (even over really small things like complaining about him doing something I didn’t like). I realized that I needed to support him no matter what when we’re around others, and save the correcting (ie letting him know what I didn’t like) when we’re alone in private.
Doing this has really helped us:
- reduce tension
- fight less
- build trust
- avoid hurt feelings
- avoid embarrassing each other
- feel more like a team
