🏆 My 6yo placed second in a mental arithmetic competition in JB

Caleb first started going for abacus classes at 4 years of age. On the first day of trial class, he walked in and saw huge trophies displayed on the shelves. He immediately told me he wanted a trophy too. I told him to work hard and one day he may get his own trophy. I thought he’d forget he said that in the near future. These are words from a 4 year old.

His first competition was when he was 5. He did countless sheets of practise questions. There were 60 questions to be completed in 5 minutes. Participants had to complete as many as possible and as accurate as possible. I was honestly impressed by his perseverance and dedication. He got 14th place.

He turned 6 a couple of months back. He signed up for another competition. The paper was tougher. 60 questions to be completed in 3 minutes. He trained everyday. He started off with only being able to complete ~30 questions….then ~40….then in the final 2 weeks, he hit ~50+ questions with no more than 3-4 mistakes. All in THREE MINUTES. Again I was thoroughly impressed by his self-motivation and discipline. And it paid off because he came in 2nd in his age group!

He was so happy and proud and my heart was and still is honestly bursting with pride. I reminded him of the words he spoke to me on that day of trial class. He immediately said, yes he remembers. I was a mixed bag of emotions- shocked he remembered, over the moon he did so well, and mostly just so very very proud of him 🥹

Kids are amazing.
