💬 Don’t Buy The Hype: Fiction Edition

⚠️ Unpopular Opinion Warning: Overrated Fiction Books ⚠️

(1) The Da Vinci Code By Dan Brown

Not without controversy when this book was published it was also a huge commerical success which spawned into a few films with Ton Hanks as Langdon. (Poor choice in my opinion) The writing is poor and relied on cheap thrills as I would come to realise in my adult years and re-reading. As well as incorporating historical inaccuracies for shock value within its formulaic mystery plot.

(2) The Last Thing He Told Me By Laura Dave

This highly popular thriller was recently made into a mini TV series on Apple+ starring Jennifer Garner in the lead role. Frankly, the plot was predictable, the characters were rather bland. The ending was what pissed me off the most given all the suspense and build up which felt for nothing.

(3) The Last By Hanna Jameson

Read this one way back in 2020. To be fair, it had an interesting premise, location and storytelling. Right until the final third and the ending which I found particulary underwhelming, given the sheer amount of hype the author and books were getting back then.

(4) The Silent Patient By Alex Michaelides

A debut novel that was very widely raved about which I found rather predictable and formulaic. While it was a page-turner and started off really well it became a hot mess really quickly with well-worn tropes in the genre.

(5) Billy Summers By Stephen King

A crime thriller, my first Stephen King’s novel in decades and disappointing. The story took far too long to get to it’s premise, was exhausting to read which by then the little twist at end did nothing but seemed rather rushed and unspectacular.

Now, the opinions are my own and this is not meant to discourage you from reading them. It's essential to form your own opinions about these books as what one reader finds overrated, another may cherish.
