My bf and i recently had a work trip to Perth so we thought why not cycle there!! Its a dream for us to bring our bikes and cycle around the world so this seemed like a great opportunity to start off with🤭

We regularly watch cycling content on youtube together so we know that Australia generally has great cycling lanes on the road and park connectors. We planned a route on Strava beforehand so we'll know how to get around during the ride. We also checked the weather and it was literally perfect between 12-20 degrees.

✈️Bringing our bike to Perth

My bf really really wanted to bring his bike over (its his baby) but i was pretty whatever about mine, i didn't mind riding a rental bike. The only way to fly the bike over is to put it in a bike box aka an extra large luggage thats made for bikes. Problem is, bike boxes are HELLA EXPENSIVE for the better quality ones ($800-$1500++). When you have a $10,000 bike of course you gotta make sure it doesn't get damaged right😢. But luckily, a friend of ours was kind enough to lend my bf his bike box since he didn't need it during this time🥹

We were flying Scoot (view my ScootPlus review here) so i called them to enquire how to go about checking in the oversized baggage. They said all i needed to do was buy sufficient baggage weight for it. I was surprised that there was no extra charge or anything😮 bc i know some airlines charges a few hundreds per oversized baggage. The bike box itself was 15kg, and the bike was ~10kg so i bought a 30kg check in allowance for it (extra 5kg for me to put other stuff in the box too).

At the airport we just went to the counter and checked in as usual!

🚲Renting a road bike

Only my bf brought his bike so i rented from Livelo Bike Rental. It was about $70 for a one day rental and it includes drop off and pick up of the bike at your hotel. The bike was dropped off at my hotel's front desk at about 3pm the day before and they picked it up the next evening (i'm not sure what time bc i just left it at the front desk). They adjust the bike based on the measurements i gave them when making my booking and the bike fit me amazingly! The bike also comes with lights, saddle bag and a spare inner tube.

🏨Bringing the bikes into the hotel room

We were super lucky that the hotel staff were very nice to let us bring up the bikes and that the hotel room was spacious enough to put both bikes plus the huge bike box.

🚴‍♀️The ride

We cycled a loop around the Swan River, starting out from Perth CBD (where our hotel was) towards Fremantle and back. We started around noon and the weather was absolutely amazing. It wasn't cold but i just wore arm sleeves cause i didn't want a tan line. The roads were super smooth and drivers were very nice as well - nobody honks and/or intentionally drives close to you for no good reason🫢. We took a few detours from the planned route whenever we saw somewhere interesting to check it out. We also saw many local cyclists and they were so nice?? every time we'd pass someone or someone passes us, they would smile and nod at us. In sg, thats actually super rare😥.

Overall, the whole experience felt so surreal🥹. It was a great first time for the both of us and we can't wait to bring our bikes and cycle in more countries/cities!
