What to Know When Visiting Valle de Guadalupe

Did you know that there is an incredible (and affordable) wine region that is less than a 2 hour drive south of San Diego?

This is one of my favorite 2023 finds - Valle de Guadalupe.

If you’re not a Southern California local, you fly into San Diego, rent a car (with Mexico car insurance coverage) and drive 2 hours south. Crossing the border into Mexico is a breeze (far less time consuming than crossing into the States).

The roads in the Valle are largely unpaved so a larger vehicle would be better and hiring a driver for wine tasting days is quite easy. We had a tour company for one day, but all others we hired a local friend of a winery employee.

US currency is widely accepted though there is a language barrier as not all locals speak English. A little bit of Spanish, Google Translate, and some patience and you’ll get by just fine.

Everyone is so kind and welcoming, not at all pretentious.

Crossing the border back home can be a hassle. Check the website for the wait times for both crossings to determine which one to use. Make sure you’re in the proper lane (Sentri if everyone in the car has their Global Entry card, Ready if they have Global Entry but no card, or everyone else). And make sure you’ve used the restroom before getting into a lane.

The small hassle of the border should not deter you from making the trip. It really is an amazing place!!
