The DIFFERENCE between Soft Rebonding and Keratin Treatment

Hair Woes: Having frizzy and messy hair with slight natural waves?

Desire end result: Want to straighten your hair, make it neater, take away the frizz on the hair but do not want the crown of your hair to be not too flat?

Your stylists will probably give you two possible solutions.

1) SOFT REBONDING

2)KERATIN TREATMENT

Both of them will give you similar end results at the beginning.

However, here we analyse for you what are the pros and cons of each service.

Soft rebonding:

First we use a chemical to break the original structure of the hair, or what we call the “bonds” inside the hair. Then we reshape it by ironing, followed by putting a neutraliser to fixed in the final structure we want. So this is like restructuring the entire hair. (Imagine a plastic surgery)

Pros:

1. Able to achieve natural straight for a longer time. Even after 4-6 months, the part that is rebonding should stay relatively straight, cause the hair has been restructured through the rebonding service. What you probably need to do is just to retouch up the new regrowth roots after 4-6 months, and avoid the part that was previously rebonded.

2. If hair elasticity is still good, hair can be restructured again into a perm after 3-4 months.

3. Anti frizz effect will definitely be stronger than a keratin

Cons

1. Rebonding chemical is slightly stronger than Keratin. And we will not recommend to repeatedly rebond the same stretch of hair. Rather we will recommend to just retouch the new grown roots each time.

2. For ladies with very strong natural curls, there might be an awkward phase where your new regrowth roots are curly while the mid length to ends will be straight. So you will see two distinctive parts.

3. If your hair has been bleached or damaged previously, rebonding chemcials will be too strong, and will not be advisable at all. Cause there will be very high risk of “frying” the hair.

4. If you want to get back your natural curls or waves a few months later, unfortunately the rebonded section will still remain relatively straight.

Keratin:

Firstly a Keratin treatment is applied on the hair. And using ironing method, the Keratin treatment is melted on the hair. This treatment will then form a “coating” around the hair and temporarily anti frizz or relax the hair for 3-4 months. Once the coating has worn off, the hair will return to its original shape and structure. (Imagine a laminating process)

Pros:

1. As the chemical is relative milder, this service can be done repeatedly every 3-4 months

2. Hair will slowly return to its original state progressively in 3-4 months time.

3. For ladies with strong natural curls, when the new regrowth hair grows up, the hair also won’t feel awkward of having natural curls and suddenly straightness like soft rebonding. Instead, there will be more blending from the roots to the ends as with time, the keratin treatment will wear off and hair will slowly bit by bit returns to its original state

Cons:

1. If you plan to perm your hair later on, keratin treatment would not be recommended. Cause keratin treatment will coat the hair, making it really difficult to apply perm lotion later on.

2. Keratin treatment primarily is to take away frizz, and relax the hair but not really totally straighten it. The natural waves or curls will slowly return after a few weeks of washes. Maybe not suddenly, but over time, the waves might slowly return. Thus if you are looking for a service that can straighten the hair more permanently for a longer period, we would still recommend a rebonding service.
