๐ฟhis is the story of me and my husband and how we spent ๐ธ.๐ป ๐ข๐๐๐๐ living apart, in order to be where we are now. I want to share this with yโall so that you always remember that true love โค๏ธโ๐ฅ can overcome anything.
๐ฎarlos and I are from ๐๐๐ฏ๐ฎ ๐จ๐บ, a small island in the Caribbean (๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ธ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐). Our country is very poor in economy and ruled by a dictatorship, which doesnโt let young people like us to thrive or accomplish any dreams. Our relationship was 1 y/o when I got notified that my ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ถ๐๐ฎ for the US ๐บ๐ธ had been approved and we got conflicting emotions since we didnโt want to separate but I had to leave to ensure us both a better future.
๐ฟhe day I left we both felt like some part of our body was being ripped apart. ๐'๐๐๐, ๐ธ ๐๐๐'๐ ๐๐ก๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐.
๐ฌfter I arrived, COVID hit and no one could travel anywhere, so I had to wait 1 year and 1 month to go to Cuba. All that time, we held up via WhatsApp phone calls; video calls were like 2 or 3 per month because Internet in Cuba is way too bad. We had gotten engaged before I left, so when I returned, ๐๐ฒ ๐ด๐ผ๐ ๐บ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฑ!
๐ด stayed for 2 months in Cuba and when I got back, I had to find another job. When I had some funds saved (9 months later), we decided to see each other in ๐๐๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ถ because Cuba was requiring quarantine upon arrival and he was trying to find a job there to get out of Cuba. Unfortunately that didnโt happen and he had to go back. But it was an amazing week there, until we had to say goodbye. It was so painful, again, that at the airport, he said to me: โ๐ ๐'๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ข๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐โ.
๐ฟhatโs when he decided to come to the US by ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐; but due to our passport restrictions as Cubans, he had to fly to Nicaragua and cross the borders of all the countries in between (๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, ๐ถ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ & ๐ผ๐๐ก๐๐๐). It was a 1-month journey full of fear, risks, threats and anxiety. He finally crossed the US border and asked for political asylum.
๐e are still in the process of making him resident but more importantly, ๐๐ฒ'๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐๐ผ๐ด๐ฒ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ!
๐ฟhose 2 years were totally worth it, and everything we went through, stays in our memories to remind us how much we love each other. The great communication and confidence we have, was our weapon to win this battle.
๐ด hope this story encourages all the people that are going through something similar to never lose hope and never give up on love. ๐ค
