1. Puppies are like babies. Everyone is SO different

- There was no online tips, video, or advice that could prepare me for both my puppies.

I raised them the exact same, but they both have their own spunky personalities.

Millie LOVED to cuddle and sleep ALL the time. Oakley on the other hand had other plans. She was constantly on the go and had to be playing 24/7.

2. The first week is the WORSE week.

Despite the excitement of bringing a new puppy in your life, it is hard. You have to keep in mind, you have prepared for them, you have been excited for them. Though the puppy has no idea who you are, where they are, or even what is going on. It takes time to adjust and get a schedule down. They will cry and keep you up all night, need to be potty trained, be VERY stressed, usually the first vet checks (and shots). The first week will keep you on your toes.

3. You can NEVER take your eyes of them.

Let’s be honest, puppies are like toddlers. They will chew on everything.and.anything. Be prepared to learn the word “no.” You need to set boundaries IMMEDIATELY, this is when their brains absorb the most information, start and build GOOD habits. Positive reinforcement is going to be your bestfriend.

4. You will always be outside.

I will be honest, I have never gotten more vitamin D in my lifetime. Learning to go pee outside and not on mom’s bed was a tough one for Millie. We spent easily 7-8 hours a day outside either playing or peeing. It paid off though, because she knows EXACTLY where the bathroom is (and it’s not my bed).

5. you have to be PATIENT and CONSISTENT.

This may be the MOST IMPORTANT thing. Patience is KEY with a new puppy. You can’t expect them to know what you want and how you want it done, that is not realistic. It takes time and training to build good habits in their behavior.

Plan out your schedule BEFORE you bring your puppy home. You have to make sure you stick to this as well. For example, going to bed at the SAME time EVERY night. Plan when you want to feed the puppy.

This is so important, consistency is key.

6. You will lose a lot of sleep.

I have never had a newborn before (only 20 years old). I would imagine having a puppy is very close too.

Personally I would decide if you want to crate train your puppy or not. If you do, set the standard off immediately. Don’t give into the crying (it will be super hard).

Believe it or not, oakley made it through each night. Millie NEVER let me sleep (we got very fond of napping together.)

7. You will end up putting your puppy first always.

Let me tell you. I never knew what I would do for my little girls until I had them in my arms. Those are my most prized possessions, I loved them as if I would’ve birthed them myself. I sometimes put their needs before mine if i’m honest. When they say, dog is man’s best friend. They were not joking. Be ready to open up your heart to your new child!!
