Going on safari in South Africa is one of my favorite travel memories! I've been twice and can't wait to go again.
To help you plan your own trip, I recommend including the items below in your suitcase. You're going to have the best time!
π Malaria medication. If you're traveling to northeast South Africa (which includes Krueger and Sabi Sands), you'll want to consider taking malaria medication. A travel clinic near your home can give you a prescription.
βοΈ Sun protection. You'll likely be in an open-air vehicle, so you'll want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Make sure your hat is close-fitting or has a neck tie. Otherwise, it'll blow away when the vehicle goes faster.
πRegular clothes. No need to buy special safari clothes (unless you want to!). I wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, with short boots that go over the pants. This is to avoid insect bites and ticks.
π§₯ Light jacket or scarf. Bring a light jacket or scarf to wear on the chilly mornings and evenings. The morning game drive starts before sunrise and the evening game drive ends after sunset.
π©±Swimsuit. Many game lodges have really nice pools. Pack a swimsuit for your free time between game drives.
πPlug adapter. South Africa has a 3 pin plug. Some places will also have a 2 pin plug (in addition to a 3 pin plug). Do a quick search for "South Africa plug adapter" to find that right adapter for your electronics.
π² Binoculars with phone attachment. Don't have a fancy camera with a big lens? No problem! Take a picture with your phone through a pair of binoculars to get a similar effect (for far less money!). Just search for "binoculars with phone attachment" on Amazon.
πPortable power bank. You don't want your phone or camera to die while seeing amazing wildlife! A portable power bank can quickly recharge your electronics on the go.
π¦ Bug repellent wipes and bracelets. Keep mosquitoes, spiders, and ticks away! I find that wipes and bracelets are easier to travel with than bug spray.
Any questions? I'd love to help in the comments!
