According to my Jeju Airbnb host, you only need to bring 3 items to your hike up Hallasan. (Disclaimer: this does not include your windbreaker or any other apparel you deem required to bring/ wear up the mountain)
1️⃣ Water (Drinking Water and Hot Water)💧
Definitely a must! Finished 4 litres of water on my way up to the mountain - 3 litres from my water bag and 1 litre of my friend’s Pocari sweat. I don’t think my friends drank that much though. I guess it’s just me.
2️⃣ Chocolate 🍫
Chocolates give you the energy you need as you hike! M&Ms are an excellent choice cause they are easy to carry around and share among friends.
3️⃣ Cup Noodles (and Chopsticks) 🍜
My friendly Airbnb host insisted that cup noodles are a must! She even lent me her vacuum flask so I could bring hot water up to cook cup noodles 🥹 Some might see it as an added weight, but I think a 300g is negligible. And yes, I did see many Koreans eating cup noodles at the summit too, so I was glad to experience this.
Oh, and some cute stories while I prepared my cup noodles:
🥹 Forgot to bring my chopsticks, so I had to use my broken Korean to ask for a pair from a group of elderly hikers beside me. So, do remember to bring whatever utensils you need to avoid being a burden 😅 Thankful to meet such kind elders; they even passed me a roll of their homemade kimbap cause they probably didn’t want to lug the food down the mountain. The handmade kimbap tasted so great. 🥹
☺️ Donated my remaining water from my vacuum flask to a Korean oppa who had his cup noodles but no water to cook them in - I passed the kindness on! 😅 He even passed us a choc in return as gratitude. 🥹
And lastly, another item I thought was essential for hiking but not mentioned by the Airbnb host was - kimbap! It was so convenient to bring around; you could definitely have it as a midway snack. 😉
Hope this article is helpful to anyone looking to climb Hallasan!
