Something I’ve never been open about. So many women have shared their struggles and stories about bringing life into the world. To be honest I’ve probably never shared because of shame, pride, and embarrassment. My infertility story started when I was 17. I was diagnosed with MRKH syndrome which is a disorder that affects the female reproductive system. I will never forget the doctor walking into the room and sitting on the bed with me after a diagnostic laparoscopy and saying, “I have good news and I have bad news. The bad news is you will never be able to carry a child, the good news is that you have functioning ovaries and will be able to have a biological child with assistance one day.” To be honest I’m not sure at 17 I really cared. Having a baby was the last thing on my mind and really for the years following. When I started dating my husband I told him about a week into the relationship that I couldn’t have kids. His response? “Ok.” Not that he didn’t care, he knew we would have a way one day. Through IVF and surrogacy we were able to have our perfect boy. Our struggles are all different but know we all have them even if we aren’t openly talking about them. There is hope and there is healing and I think I would have coped much better throughout the process if I was open about my struggles back then.
