I was out in my garden today reflecting on my huge zinnia crop this summer! There is nothing like having fresh flowers in your house all summer and fall at basically no cost!✨ Here are my best tips to grow beautiful zinnias!

1. Start them inside!

I have some plant lights, and I always start my zinnias early! If you don’t have plant lights, you can always start them outside after the frost date is over! I use 4” pots and sow a few seeds in each pot. Once they germinate, or pop up, I pinch off all of the seedlings except for the one that looks the healthiest! That’s the “winner” in each pot. Once they get big enough, I transplant them into the ground!

2. Pinch them!

This sounds counter intuitive, but once my zinnias are big enough to plant, I cut the whole plant off right above the first set of leaves from the soil. This allows twice as many zinnias to grow from one plant! The plant will put out new stems, and you will get two stems instead of just one.

3. Cut them as much as you’d like!

Zinnias are “cut and come again”. The more you cut, the more grow! So don’t be afraid to cut from your zinnia plant! This means you should have plenty zinnias for both your garden and your vase indoors

This isn’t a growing tip, but when you cut your zinnias and put them in water, they will last longer if you put a *drop* of bleach into the vase water!

Zinnias are such a fun flower to grow in the summer! I hope this helps you grow the zinnias of your dreams ✨Osage County
