Open Kitchen: Yay or Nay???

As someone who cooks alot, an open kitchen wasn’t really a consideration for me initially… However due to the layout of our home and space constraint, we did not really have much option. While we considered adding glass panels/bifold panels to make it more functional, we decided against it ultimately and gambled with an open kitchen. Very thankful it paid off!

🚫 The main con of our open kitchen so far will be the smell in the living room when we cook. Thankfully we have a balcony so that isn’t really a big issue unless we are air-conditioning the whole house. Contrary to our initial concern of an oily home, using induction + hood actually helps alot with the grease and smell. Despite very heavy cooking and also frying at times, we have yet to encounter issues with oil and grease. Rumour has it that stove cooking generally feels oilier! (We ain’t too sure if this is factually true!)

✅️ Now for the pros of open kitchen:

1. Visually, a bigger, more open and inviting home.

2. Kitchen peninsula functions as a pseudo bar counter when we have guests over!

3. Able to mingle with guests while continuing to prepare food or getting them food and drinks at the kitchen. This also means more quality time with the family too even when cooking.

4. Able to do chores while watching TV! Honestly a big perk for K who now finds dishwashing a little more enjoyable.

Generally, we are very thankful to not regret having an open kitchen. It was after all, a very tough decision which we deliberated on for a very long time. Hope this will help you in making your home reno decision too!
