Unveiling the design choices that make all the difference in making our modest 86sqm 4-room flat look Bigger than it is. (at no or minimal cost, with limited hacking)

Tip 1 A Cohesive Palette: This is an obvious one, but often forgotten by many in the midst of designing their first home, especially with the overwhelming no. of colour & textures to play with. For us, we deliberately (& diligently) opted for a consistent beige/oat color scheme with warm wood accents throughout the entire flat. This creates visual continuity, blurring the lines between rooms and making the space feel expansive.

Tip 2 Embrace Open-Concept: We reimagined our kitchen by removing the partition wall and hacking down our yard, creating a seamless flow between cooking, dining, pantry and laundry space.

Tip 3 Play with Negative Space: A bold move, but forgoing upper kitchen cabinets instantly opened up the room. We intentionally went without upper kitchen cabinets simply cos we knew those were storage we didn’t need, and would hardly access. This was one of the more unconventional design choices but we absolutely love how the added negative space contribute to a sense of spaciousness and calm to the kitchen.

Tip 4 The Art of Invisible Grout: We opted for larger format tiles (60x60 cm) to reduce number of grouts on our floors and walls. Also, we requested for color-matched grout for a seamless, almost micro-cement effect. (Yes, you can request for your ID to use grouts that matches your tiles!) This subtle design detail minimizes visual breaks and amplifies the sense of space.

Tip 5 No Skirting = More Vertical Space: For a minimalist aesthetic and uninterrupted lines, we chose to skip tile skirting. This definitely made the space feel more open, but fair warning: mopping mishaps and bumps on the walls are a real possibility. Approach with caution. 😅

Tip 6 Floor to Ceiling Carpentry: Maximizing vertical space is key. Ensure your carpentry extends all the way to the ceiling, eliminating gaps and drawing the eye upward. While we were designing our carpentry we also made it a point to minimise the “gap”between our carpentry doors and the ceiling to create a more seamless lengthening of the space.

Hope these 6 tips have been helpful!
