🐟 overfeeding
- the general guideline is that their stomach is the size of their eyeball! that’s 2-4 dry pellets depending on which ones you use
- monitor your betta to make sure they’re a healthy weight
- overweight: decrease frequency of feeding (they’ll do just fine eating every other day)
- underweight: increase feeding frequency
- i feed Sunny 2 pellets once a day
🐟 breathing air from the surface
- bettas have a labyrinth organ, so they need to breathe air from the surface to survive
- make sure your betta can easily swim to the surface!
- floating plants and toys (the log and leaf in the 7th picture) gives them easy access and a place near the surface to rest
🐟 exploring and hiding
- bettas are curious and love exploring their tank!
- they need places to hide and rest
- aquatic plants with big leaves are perfect for bettas to swim around and rest on
🐟 bettas need to flare sometimes
- flaring is like exercise! it helps strengthen their fins and stretch their gills
- flaring should only be done a few minutes a day by placing a mirror in front of your betta
- constant flaring and glass surfing is bad and is a sign that your betta is stressed
🐟 warm water
- bettas are tropical fish!
- their water should be between 72-86 degrees F, with the most common temp being 75-80
- get a heater and thermometer! cold water makes it easier to get sick
🐟 interacting with your betta
- bettas are smart and can get bored easily
- they can recognize their owner’s voice, so talk to them!
- draw on the outside of their tank with a dry erase marker
- have them follow your finger
- teach them tricks!
🐟 proper tank size
- bettas do best in a 5+ gallon tank with a lid (they’re capable of jumping out)
- they like swimming side to side rather than up and down, so make sure your tank is longer than it is tall!
- if you want to put them with other fish, do the proper research (more than likely you’ll need more than 5 gallons)
- smaller tanks require more upkeep
