The belief that “one and done” parents are being selfish and not giving their child a sibling is widespread, but in reality it’s actually the opposite. Here are a few of my reasons.

(Disclaimer - This isn’t to shame parents who have multiple)

1. The financial cost of being a parent.

- I have the financial capacity to give my daughter everything she needs. I don’t have to worry about budgeting for multiple kids, for ex: family trips, medical bills, wants, college, holidays, school, daycare, etc.

2. Mental Health

- Everyone tends to forget about mental health. I often get asked what if money wasn’t an issue? My answer is still the same, I would still be happy with having 1 child because I know if I had more than one my mental health would deteriorate. I have more patience and I’m not overwhelmed. The way I see it, a happy parent equals a happy child.

3. Freedom of having an only child.

- Meaning I still have some free time to myself, while still being happy and balanced. Don’t get me wrong I’m sure parents of multiples still have freedom, but it’s limited.

4. Lack of Support, no village.

- I don’t have the village that my parents and grandparents had. Times are different, my parents are still working. They also fail to keep in touch, but expect me to keep in touch with them.

5. All of my undivided attention.

She gets all of my attention. I have the capacity to fully invest in my child as opposed to what I grew up with. I’m also able to attend school & sports events without worrying a sibling's event will be on the same day. We’re also able to do one on one dates together.
