This honeycomb makgeolli has been making its rounds on everyone’s Tiktok or Instagram stories. If they’ve been to Seoul, they highly likely have gone to Sinsajeon. So was it worth the trip?

Located just a few minutes from Sinsa station, the restaurant is nestled in a busy pedestrian street. We went there at 5 PM and it was already really busy. We were lucky to get seated immediately as it was just a table for two. They did try to check our IDs though.

We ordered their most popular makgeolli and the honeycomb came at an extra cost. I think it was around $4 extra per pax/cup. I thought it came together with the drink but I guess I was wrong LOL. The makgeolli came in this special pitcher, so I guess it’s not something you can buy off the shelves in supermarkets. And tbh I don’t even know if it’s just a placebo effect, but it really was of much better quality than the other ones I’ve had while I was in Seoul.

When you order the honeycomb, the waiter will come to your table with a big box of the actual honeycomb and cut it up for you. It was honestly so cool seeing that in person. The honeycomb makes the makgeolli extra sweet, which I absolutely loved. The honeycomb bits can get a bit annoying tho. I would not recommend chewing the honeycomb because the comb itself tastes like bland cardboard. Hot tip — smush the honeycomb in your cup with a spoon to make sure that the honey has been squeezed out into your drink. That way you can just avoid the comb, and just enjoy the honey in the makgeolli.

Unfortunately we had a very heavy meal earlier and couldn’t order any main dishes. However we did get the potato and cheese jeon just to try. I am usually not the biggest fan of potato dishes, but THIS. It really changed the game for me. So creamy and thick from the melted cheese, the shredded potatoes that made the shell so crispy. It was perfection. My only gripe was that I was too full at that point to order more.

So was it worth the trip? Honestly, for me, yes. But only because I love both honey and makgeolli. I’ve got friends who say that they’ve also visited the place and just didn’t like it at all. So I guess it’s really up to you and your preferences. But if honey or makgeolli is your thing, I can’t recommend this place enough when you’re visiting seoul. This is definitely going to be a staple restaurant for me to visit every time I go back to Seoul.
