Kids activity: exploding fireworks

The perfect summer activity to do at home with your littles when the weather is too hot to play outside! And, bonus, it’s not messy and you likely have everything you need on hand already! So, let’s make water fireworks together!

Here’s what you are going to need:

🎆 2 glasses, at least one of them needs to be clear or mostly clear for you to be able to see through

🎆 cooking oil or baby oil (we used olive oil)

🎆 food coloring- any colors you’d like

🎆 something to stir like a toothpick, skewer or spoon/fork

🎆 water

Here’s what you are going to do:

🎆 pour your oil into a cup (you can just eyeball it but we used 1/4-1/2 a cup for this, it doesn’t need to be a ton)

🎆 fill the other cup halfway with water- make sure this is your clear cup

🎆 add drops of your food coloring to the oil- we probably did about 10 drops of various colors (this could be a fun way to experiment with colors as well!)

🎆 stir the oil and food coloring together

🎆 pour the oil and food coloring mixture to the glass with water in it

🎆 watch what happens to the drops of colors

Hint: it’s water fireworks and it is for sure mesmerizing to watch!
