Being Independent Tip: Fix things yourself

Oftentimes, I see my fellow sisters get taken advantage of at the mechanic or tire shops. Any installation company as well is guilty of what I consider part of the cursed "pink tax" women deal with. Even I get talked down to when purchasing new tires, and I drove CDL class A commercial vehicles (flatbed). I can put my own tires on, but I don't own a garage. The only way to avoid being overcharged is to be educated and learn to do it ourselves before purchasing services from others.

Knowledge is power, and it's easier to go into a shop and tell them exactly what you want done so you can refuse a diagnosis charge. If you didn't know, many repair people charge to just "find the problem" or run a diagnostic. It is definitely harder to try and fix things yourself, but in the long run even when you do purchase services, it'll save you money to understand what you're buying.

We already pay more for our clothes, new and used. Personally, I don't need worked over to fix my car or home, too. Just simply asking a friend to teach you a thing or two is much easier than paying extra.
